When Alan and Jules purchased their holiday home at Akebar Park in June 2020, it wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. In fact, their journey into holiday home ownership had been decades in the making.
Alan and Jules had been visiting this part of Yorkshire for nearly 48 years. Over that time, they developed a deep connection to the area, regularly returning to enjoy its landscapes, history, and pace of life. So when they discovered Akebar Park, it immediately stood out as somewhere special.
Like many buyers, Alan and Jules didn’t rush into ownership straight away. They had been considering the idea for a couple of years, visiting parks and weighing up their options. However, everything changed when they saw a particular lakeside plot at Akebar and they bought their plans to buy a holiday home forward so they could start enjoying it straight away.
Their experience includes living and working in locations including the South Coast, Cambridge and as far north as John O’Groats and Brora—places known for their stunning coastal and hill views.
This background means their decision to buy at Akebar Park came with a deep understanding of what makes a great park—and what doesn’t.
Even after purchasing their lodge, Alan and Jules haven’t completely left touring behind. They still own their touring caravan, originally expecting they would transition fully to their static for holidays.
Instead, they’ve found a balance—enjoying the flexibility of touring alongside the comfort and consistency of their lodge at Akebar.
“We thought we’d swap completely,” they said, “but we’ve kept the tourer as well. It’s nice to have both options.”
Alan and Jules have recently upgraded from their initial purchase to a larger, three-bedroom lodge. “The third bedroom and extra space mean the whole family can enjoy the lodge too.”
Now in their fifth season on their second plot, Alan and Jules have fully embraced life at Akebar Park. Their lodge has become a base not just for relaxation, but for exploring the wider Yorkshire Dales and beyond, often with their grandson.
They regularly enjoy:
Alan, Jules and their family also make the most of local experiences, from falconry and archery days at Bolton Castle to visiting the Wensleydale Creamery.
For food, Cover Bridge Pub is a favourite stop, while Northallerton’s markets (held on Wednesdays and Saturdays) are their go-to for shopping. Evenings are often spent at the Georgian Theatre in Richmond, which they visit regularly.
One of the most important aspects of ownership for Alan and Jules is the time it allows them to spend with family—especially their 9-year-old grandson, who visits often.
Having a lodge at Akebar gives them a comfortable, welcoming space to create lasting memories together, whether that’s exploring the outdoors or simply enjoying time on the park.
When asked what advice they would give to others considering holiday home ownership, their answer is simple:
“Life is too short—you don’t know what’s around the corner.”
It’s a philosophy that led them to make the decision when the right opportunity came along—and one they clearly haven’t looked back on.
For Alan and Jules, Akebar Park combines everything they were looking for:
Their story reflects what many owners discover—that a holiday home isn’t just a purchase, but a lifestyle choice rooted in experience, connection, and making the most of your time.
