For Margaret and Michael, finding the right place to unwind and enjoy life was important — but they didn’t expect to fall in love quite so quickly.
Having visited The Friars Head a few times before, they were already familiar with the area and had always enjoyed their time here. Originally, they had been considering buying a traditional property, but it was Michael who first suggested looking into a lodge instead.
That decision changed everything.
“The minute we walked onto the park, we fell in love,” Michael explains. “I’m usually someone who likes to think things over, but there was no need here.”
From the very first visit, it was the friendly atmosphere that stood out most. Over time, Margaret says that sense of community has only grown stronger.
“The more the park has developed, the friendlier it’s become. There are more familiar faces now, and it really feels like a community.”
Before settling at Akebar Park, Margaret and Michael had spent years travelling across Europe in their motorhome, attending motocross events — a lifelong passion of Michael’s.
Having even competed himself, motocross remains a big part of his life, and he’s now passed that passion down to one of his granddaughters.
Professionally, Michael has worked as a self-employed plasterer his entire life and continues to stay active, while Margaret dedicated her career to caring for others before retiring at 62.
Now, life looks a little different — and exactly how they like it.
These days, Margaret enjoys a slower pace of life, making the most of everything the park and surrounding area has to offer.
“I spend my days relaxing and enjoying the park,” she says. “I go walking on a morning with my friend Fran, who also owns here.”
With a variety of scenic walks right on their doorstep, their daily routine has become one of their favourite parts of owning a lodge at Akebar.
Being closer to their daughter Jena was another important factor in choosing the area, making Akebar Park the perfect location for both lifestyle and family.
Margaret and Michael love exploring local food spots, but The Friars Head remains a firm favourite.
“It’s always our go-to,” they say.
Their lodge has also become a hub for friends and family, with regular visits from loved ones who enjoy both the park and the surrounding area.
“There’s always something going on,” Margaret adds. “We all enjoy the events on park — and the fact they’re free is brilliant. There’s something for all ages.”
For Margaret and Michael, it’s not just the location — it’s the feeling of the place.
“Why choose Akebar?” Margaret says. “Why not? It’s a friendly, happy park with a fabulous pub.”
They also appreciate the continued investment and care that goes into the park.
“They’re always improving things, and it really shows. Everything is kept smart and tidy, and every lodge has its own bit of character.”
One of their favourite touches is the sense of fun and community, particularly events like the annual ‘Best Plot’ competition, which brings owners together and adds personality to the park.
When asked what advice she would give to anyone considering buying a holiday home, Margaret’s answer is simple:
“Go with your heart.”
It’s advice that clearly worked for them.
Margaret has no regrets and says she absolutely loves spending her time at Akebar Park — a place that has become a holiday home in the heart of a new community.
