Whether you’re completely new to the sport or already playing regularly, it’s a great way to connect with other players, arrange matches, and stay up to date with coaching sessions and padel news at Akebar.

Padel is easy to learn and great fun from the very first game. Played in doubles on an enclosed court, it combines elements of tennis and squash.

The ball must bounce once on your side before you return it, and after the serve, the surrounding glass walls come into play. You can use the walls to keep the rally going, adding a unique twist that makes padel fast-paced and exciting.

Points are scored just like tennis (15, 30, 40, game), but rallies tend to last longer, making it a highly social and engaging sport that’s suitable for all ages and abilities.

Unlike a tennis racquet, a padel racquet has a solid face with perforated holes and a shorter handle. Combined with the slightly softer, lower-pressure balls, this creates a game that’s easy to pick up but packed with excitement.

Don’t worry if you don’t have your own equipment yet. We have padel racquets available to hire and balls available to purchase, so you can get straight onto the court without investing in any gear.

Simply pop into reception before your game and we’ll get you set up.

Our courts start from £20 per hour for weekday sessions. As padel is usually a four player game, this means it works out at just £5 per player. You can also use the Playtomic app to split the cost between the players.

Akebar Padel is located between Leyburn and Bedale at Akebar Park. We are also attached to The Friars Head Pub. Pop our post code in your sat nav to find us DL8 5LY

What is Padel?

Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, combining elements of tennis and squash into a fun, social, and accessible game.

Played on a smaller enclosed court, padel uses solid racquets and lower-pressure balls, making it easier to learn than tennis while still offering plenty of excitement. The walls surrounding the court are part of the game, creating longer rallies and adding a strategic twist to every point.

Whether you’re looking for a gentle way to stay active or a competitive challenge, padel can be played at your own pace. It’s a fantastic low-impact workout that improves fitness, coordination, reaction times, and mobility, all while having fun with friends.

Best of all, most beginners can enjoy a rally within minutes of stepping onto the court, making padel a sport that truly is for everyone.

Refuel

Located next to The Friars Head, our padel courts are the perfect place for social catch-ups, friendly competition and some serious post-padel refuelling.

Pizza & Padel? Padel & Pints? We’ve got it covered.

After your game, relax with drinks, pizza and great food just steps from the courts — making Akebar Park one of the best places to play padel in North Yorkshire.

Social Space

Looking for the perfect space to gather after padel? Our Guiness Garden is available to reserve for groups and a great space for post padel pizza and pints!

If you’d like to reserve an outdoor table area for your group after your session, please email emily@thefriarshead.co.uk
