Top Things to Do in the Yorkshire Dales

If you’re looking for top things to do in the Yorkshire Dales and the surrounding area when you come to stay in our park, we have plenty of suggestions!

From amazing natural landscapes to fascinating historic sites, there’s something for everyone here in North Yorkshire.

So, here are just a few options for you and the family to enjoy…

The Forbidden Corner

You don’t have to spend hours researching what top things to do in Yorkshire Dales when you have kids in tow – everywhere you look there’s an adventure to be found. For example, just a 20-minute drive from our park, The Forbidden Corner is a great place to take the family.

An eclectic mix of sculptures, gardens, mazes and more, this attraction is a magical (if a little odd) adventure for the whole family!

Known by its own admission as ‘the strangest place in the world’, this labyrinth of tunnels, follies, chambers and surprises are built within a four-acre garden. An explorer’s paradise!

Bolton Castle

We are fortunate to be nestled on the fringes of Leyburn, a National Park gateway town at the heart of Wensleydale.

For something slightly less strange but equally as adventurous, why not take the family to Bolton Castle? Situated in Wensleydale, it’s a great place for educational trips, historical tours, and falconry experiences.

Bolton Castle isn’t just for kids, though – this beautiful setting is perfect if you’re after a bit of quiet scenery. Built over 600 years ago, the castle is one of the country’s best-preserved medieval sites.

We’ve given it a bit more of a feature in our blog “7 must-see Yorkshire Dales attractions during the summer holidays” which you can read below.

Belvoir Castle

Belvoir Castle is one of the UK’s finest examples of a regency castle. It rests on a hill, overlooking the vale of Belvoir, meaning ‘beautiful view’ in French.

From the top, you can enjoy views over Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Lincolnshire. It is packed with wonderful historic art accumulated over centuries by successive generations of the Manner family.

Take a guided tour, or simply stroll at your leisure, there are many clearly marked walks, with names like ‘Spiral walk’ or the ‘Duke’s walk’ leading visitors among the gardens and lakes. Explore the Formal Gardens, Japanese Gardens or lose yourself in the aromas of the Rose or Duchess Garden. This attraction is accessible to all, and there’s a wonderful onsite cafe, enabling you to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea after all the fresh air and activity.

Brimham Rocks

The natural spectacle of Brimham Rocks is an amazing site of giant rock formations created by an immense river 100 million years before the first dinosaurs! Now that is old!

Due to 320 million years of ice, wind, and movement of continents, the rocks are now oddly and wonderfully formed. And, with a little imagination, they resemble familiar creatures!

Owned by the National Trust, you can roam Brimham Rocks to your heart’s content, from just a ten-minute stroll to a four-hour hike to see the whole site – great for the explorers among you.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden

As a World Heritage Site, these ancient abbey ruins and idyllic water gardens have drawn people in for centuries.

Fountains Abbey was built by monks who sought a simpler existence and, later on, the elegant water garden was created by former politician John Aislabie.

This truly is a one-of-a-kind site where there are plenty of things to see and do for all the family.

And if you’re hungry afterwards, there’s a range of wonderful places you can go for food and drink; many of which we’ve covered in our “Top 5 places to eat and drink in the Yorkshire Dales” blog!

Aysgarth Falls

Not far from our park is yet another stunning attraction. The perfectly idyllic waterfall on the River Ure is home to stunning scenery and lovely walks.

Surrounding the river are the beautiful villages of Caperby and Aysgarth, where you can find lovely cafes and pubs to eat at. The perfect location to put your photography skills to the test, it really is worth a visit!

We’ve shared some more details about Aysgarth Falls in our blog, “Things to do in the Yorkshire Dales,” which you can read via the link below.

These are only five of many fun, beautiful, and awe-inspiring places that you’ll be able to visit during your stay in the Yorkshire Dales.
